Japan’s National Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals in Fiscal Year 2021 (Final Figures)

The Ministry of the Environment and the National Institute for Environmental Studies have released Japan’s National Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals (final figures1) for fiscal year (FY) 2021.
Greenhouse gas emissions and removals for FY2021 were 1,122 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2 eq.), showing a 2.0% (21.5 Mt CO2 eq.) increase compared to FY2020. This was a 20.3% (285.3 Mt CO2 eq.) decrease compared to the greenhouse gas emissions in FY2013.
Removals for FY2021 were 47.6 Mt CO2 eq. and this was the first-time in the last four years that the removals turned to an increase.
Additionally, removals by mangroves, which constitute a part of blue-carbon ecosystems, were estimated for Japan for the first time and reported under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change together with the above-mentioned emissions and removals.

Note: Japan’s fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 31.
Japan’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in FY2021 were 1,170 Mt CO2 eq. This was a 2.0% increase compared to FY2020 and a 3.3% decrease compared to FY2019.

The possible main factor for the increase in emissions as compared to FY2020 is the increased energy consumption due to the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This trend is also confirmed for other G7 countries.

The main factors for the increase in removals for the first time in the last four years are considered to be the consistent implementation of forest maintenance and the promotion of wood use.
