Outcomes of the Seventh Session of the Committee on Environment and Development (CED7) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)

The Seventh Session of the Committee on Environment and Development (CED7) at the ministerial level, of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) was held in Bangkok, Thailand from November 29 to December 1, 2022.
 
At CED7, the “Ministerial Declaration on Environment and Development for Asia and the Pacific, 2022” and its annex “Regional Action Programme on Air Pollution” were adopted.
Outline of CED7 Outcomes

(1) Date and Meeting Format:
From November 29 to December 1, 2022
Hybrid: In-person (Bangkok, Thailand) and online meeting

(2) Venue:
The UN Conference Center, Bangkok, Thailand

(3) Participants:
Representatives from 32 members and associate members of ESCAP (30 members and 2
associate members), relevant international organizations, and NGOs. From Japan, the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs participated as a government delegation.

(4) Theme:
“Protecting Our Planet through Regional Cooperation and Solidarity in Asia and the Pacific”

(5) Outline of the Conference:
At the conference, the following topics were reported:
- Review of the implementation of the “Ministerial Declaration on Environment and Development for Asia and the Pacific, 2017”
- Protecting our planet through regional cooperation and solidarity in Asia and the Pacific

In addition, the “Ministerial Declaration on Environment and Development for Asia and the Pacific, 2022” and its annex “Regional Action Programme on Air Pollution” were adopted.

-Regional Action Programme on Air Pollution
The following objectives were included:
- Promotion of science-based cooperation
- Establishment of an open regional platform for the exchange of information
- Promotion of policy dialogue and technical cooperation
- Improvement of air quality management
- Facilitation of air monitoring and sharing of open data related to air quality
- Exchange of best practices and outreach
- Facilitation of capacity-building
- Mobilization of commitment to multilateral cooperation

(6) Others:
The Ministry of the Environment, Japan, organized a side-event on November 30, 2022, and introduced the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET), which Japan has been supporting and leading for many years, and presented some EANET projects led by Japan.
