Publication of the "G20 Report on Actions against Marine Plastic Litter: Fourth Information Sharing based on the G20 Implementation Framework"

At the G20 Osaka Summit in June 2019, the "Osaka Blue Ocean Vision" was shared, which aims to reduce additional pollution by marine plastic litter to zero by 2050. To realise the vision, the “G20 Implementation Framework for Actions on Marine Plastic Litter” was adopted at the "G20 Ministerial Meeting on Energy Transitions and Global Environment for Sustainable Growth," held in the same month, for countries to share information on countermeasures and promote effective action through mutual learning.
Following the "G20 Report on Actions against Marine Plastic Litter: First Information Sharing based on the G20 Implementation Framework,” formulated at the “Follow-up sessions for the G20 Implementation Framework” held in October 2019, and the “G20 Report on Actions against Marine Plastic Litter: Second Information Sharing based on the G20 Implementation Framework,” compiled at the G20 Environment Ministers' Meeting held in September 2020 in Saudi Arabia, and the “G20 Report on Actions against Marine Plastic Litter: Third Information Sharing based on the G20 Implementation Framework,” compiled at the G20 Environment Ministers' Meeting held in July 2021 in Italy, the “Fourth Report” was compiled for the G20 Environment Ministers' Meeting held in August this year, under the initiative of the Government of Indonesia, this year’s G20 Presidency, with the support of the Ministry of the Environment, Japan.

Non-G20: Antigua and Barbuda, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Fiji, Marshall Islands, Myanmar, Nepal, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Samoa, Senegal, Singapore, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sultanate of Oman, Thailand, United Arab Emirates (20 countries)

International Organisations / NGOs: Asian Development Bank (ADB), Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), Ellen MacArthur Foundation, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), World Economic Forum Global Plastic Action Partnership (WEF GPAP) (8 organisations)

*From the report, the progress of the development of national action plans/strategies and of the development of legislation was confirmed in many countries. *Challenges faced by many countries were also identified, such as recycling system improvement, sound waste management, data collection, public awareness, lack of financial incentives for waste treatment and innovation, and project delays due to COVID-19.
