Results of the IUCN World Conservation Congress Abu Dhabi 2025
1. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s World Conservation Congress 2025 (The 2025 IUCN Congress), hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was held in Abu Dhabi for seven days from October 9 to 15, 2025.
2. The 2025 IUCN Congress brought together over 10,000 attendees, on-site and online. From Japan, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (IUCN State Member), the Ministry of the Environment (IUCN Government Agency Member) and NGOs such as the IUCN Japan Committee (IUCN-J) participated in the conference.
3. During the Members’ Assembly, Members approved the 20-year Strategic Vision and a new programme for the next four-year period, conducted IUCN council elections for the role of President as well as Regional Councilors and Commission Chairs, and adopted motions. The “Abu Dhabi Call to Action” was also presented and welcomed. At the Forum, approximately 1,000 events were held, including high-level dialogues and thematic sessions.
4. As a result of the election, incumbent President, Her Excellency Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, was re-elected and will serve a second term. Prof. YOSHINAKA Atsuhiro (Rakuno Gakuen University, Japan) was elected as a Regional Councilor representing South and East Asia.
5.The Ministry of the Environment of Japan, together with the Asia Protected Areas Partnership (APAP) Secretariat, held an exhibition event at the Forum, focusing on initiatives related to Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) in the Asian region, sharing progress and challenges at the national and regional levels. Furthermore, Japan received the “Reverse the Red Awards Medal” alongside 25 other countries, being recognized that the formulation and implementation of the “National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan of Japan 2023-2030” contributes to Target 4 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (preventing the extinction of threatened species and significantly reducing extinction risks). In addition, Japan's Basic Act on Biodiversity was selected as a finalist for the World Future Policy Award 2025 by the World Future Council, which recognizes forward-looking solutions to current challenges facing humanity.
