MOE Japan Selects Projects for the "FY2022 Demonstration Project for a Plastic Resource Circulation System toward a Decarbonized Society" Program ((i) Demonstration Projects for Manufacturing and Social Implementation of CO2-Saving Jet Fuel or Jet Fuel Materials Using Biomass and Other Waste; and (ii) Demonstration Projects for Establishment of Recycling Process of Waste Oil and CO2 Emission Reduction)

In order to establish a plastic resource recycling system based on the Resource Circulation Strategy for Plastics (decided on May 31, 2019), it is necessary to gradually reform the use of conventional fossil-derived resources and replace them with alternative materials, and also to upgrade technologies and systems for recycling of used fossil-derived resources.

Under the "FY2022 Demonstration Project for a Plastic Resource Circulation System toward a Decarbonized Society" Program ((i) Demonstration Projects for Manufacturing and Social Implementation of CO2-Saving Jet Fuel or Jet Fuel Materials Using Biomass and Other Waste; and (ii) Demonstration Projects for Establishment of Recycling Process of Waste Oil and CO2 Emission Reduction), MOE Japan called for applications for entrusted and subsidized projects. As a result of the preliminary screening based on application documents and the review by the Evaluation and Review Committee composed of experts, MOE Japan selected the projects indicated below.

1. Outline of the "FY2022 Demonstration Project for a Plastic Resource Circulation System toward a Decarbonized Society" Program

MOE Japan has decided to gradually reform the use of conventional fossil-derived resources in order to accelerate the establishment of a resource recycling system that will contribute to the creation of a decarbonized society. In this Program, MOE Japan carries out demonstration projects necessary for solving technical challenges and achieving commercialization by developing materials that will replace fossil-derived resources and upgrading technologies and systems for recycling of used fossil-derived resources.
(i) Demonstration projects for manufacturing and social implementation of CO2-saving jet fuel or jet fuel materials using biomass and other waste
(ii) Demonstration projects for establishment of recycling process of waste oil and CO2 emission reduction

2. Selection results

Under this Program, MOE Japan received 6 applications (5 for entrusted projects and 1 for a subsidized project), and as a result of a preliminary screening of application documents and a review by the Evaluation and Review Committee composed of experts, 3 projects (2 entrusted projects and 1 subsidized project) have been selected as shown below.

(Entrusted projects: 2 projects)

Demonstration projects for manufacturing and social implementation of CO2-saving jet fuel or jet fuel materials using biomass and other waste

GREEN EARTH INSTITUTE CO., LTD.
Project name: Demonstration project of production of bio-jet fuel derived from woody biomass
Outline:
The project aims to establish a process for producing bio-jet fuel from pulp that is derived from woody biomass such as used paper by applying technology that uses microorganisms, and demonstrate domestic production of bio-jet fuel while expanding the production scale.

Demonstration projects for establishment of recycling process of waste oil and CO2 emission reduction

ENEOS Corporation
Project name: Establishment of a process for recycling waste lubricant oil into lubricant base oil
Outline:
In order to achieve material recycling and CO2 reduction by recycling used lubricant oil collected in Japan into lubricant base oil, the project aims to study the properties of waste oil and how to solve technical challenges with the base oil recycling process and verify the effect of this process in reducing CO2 emissions from the lifecycle of lubricant oil products.

(Subsidized project: 1 project)

Demonstration projects for establishment of recycling process of waste oil and CO2 emission reduction)

CHUSEI OIL CO., LTD
Project name: Demonstration project of CO2 reduction through advanced distillation and reuse of waste solvents from the medicinal chemical and medical device production process, which has not yet been put into reuse
Outline:
The project aims to demonstrate CO2 reduction by distilling waste solvent containing NMP discharged from the medicinal chemical and medical device production process, and collecting it as liquid with higher purity, lower-impurity in higher yield than new liquid, and thereby reducing the production volume of new liquid and reducing the volume of waste solvent.
