Signing of the Statement of Intent on Environment with the African Development Bank

On August 20, 2025, on the occasion of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) held in Yokohama, DOI Kentaro, Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, and Dr. Kevin Kariuki, Vice President for Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth, the African Development Bank (AfDB) signed the Statement of Intent (SOI) on cooperation regarding environmental conservation and other areas between the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and AfDB.

Based on this SOI, both parties plan to further develop concrete cooperative relations in the field of environmental conservation.

Details of the Signing of the Statement of Intent between the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and AfDB

The Ministry of the Environment of Japan and AfDB, which provides support to African countries, confirmed their intention to establish cooperative relations in the fields of environmental conservation, pollution control and nature conservation. 

As specific areas of cooperation, both parties confirmed their policy to strengthen collaboration in the following areas: (i) climate change measures, including the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM); (ii) adaptation and loss & damage; and (iii) public health improvement through waste management.
