Selection Results of the Projects to be Supported - Financial Support Program for Biodiversity Conservation Activities, FY2022-

1.The Ministry of Environment (MOE), Japan, has been implementing the financial support program for biodiversity conservation, which promotes regional activities contributing to the conservation and restoration of biodiversity, by subsidizing a part of expenses necessary for such activities.

2.MOE Japan selected 34 new projects and 55 ongoing projects after the screening of applications for the financial support program for biodiversity conservation.

Outline of the financial support program for biodiversity conservation

The government will partially subsidize expenses necessary for activities contributing to the conservation and restoration of biodiversity in the regions, in order to steadily promote these activities nationwide, aiming for the realization of a society in harmony with nature.

Requirements for the program are as follows.

[1] Designated Invasive Alien Species Control Measures
Research on and control of designated invasive alien species or alien species considered to be designated by the Act on the Prevention of Adverse Ecological Impacts Caused by Designated Invasive Alien Species (Trachemys scripta and Procambium clarkii)

[2] Conservation and restoration in conserved and protected areas
- National parks or Quasi-National parks based on the Natural Parks Act
- Wilderness Areas or Nature Conservation Areas based on the Nature Conservation Act
- National Wildlife Protection Area based on the Wildlife Protection, Control, and Hunting Management Act
- Ramsar Wetlands - wetlands of international importance listed under the Ramsar Convention
- Natural World Heritage based on the World Heritage Convention
- Projects in biosphere reserves based on Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme of UNESCO

[3] Establishment of an ecosystem conservation network for extensive cooperation
Development of plans based on the Act on the Promotion of Regional Cooperation for Biodiversity Conservation*or the Law for the Promotion of Nature Restoration* or implementation of projects based on such plans, which contributes to the establishment of an ecosystem conservation network

[4] Activities to promote regional cooperation with the private sector
Establishment of the Support Center for Regional Cooperation Activities on Biodiversity Conservation based on the Act on the Promotion of Regional Cooperation for Biodiversity Conservation* or the establishment of an operating system thereof, and the initiatives implemented by such centers, including the arrangement of regional and private-sector cooperation (including matching between companies and regional organizations/NPOs) and the introduction of specialists to them

[5] Ex-situ conservation of national endangered species of wild fauna and flora
Conservation measures implemented by zoos, botanical gardens, aquariums, or any other facilities for the rearing, breeding, and release back into the wild of national endangered species of wild fauna and flora based on the Act on Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora

[6] In-situ conservation of national endangered species of wild fauna and flora
Measures implemented by local governments, specified non-profit corporation, private companies, etc. to conserve national endangered species of wild fauna and flora based on the Act on Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, such as research on the distribution of species, development of a conservation plan, improvement of habitat environment, watching, and improvement of organizational structure

[7] Development of early control measures to prevent adverse effects of invasive alien species
Development of regional plans for early detection and control of designated invasive alien species or alien species considered to be designated by the Act on the Prevention of Adverse Ecological Impacts Caused by Designated Invasive Alien Species (Trachemys scripta and Procambarus clarkii) that are yet to invade or are at the early stage of invasion, and research necessary therefor

[8] Projects for the creation of a hub of Satoyama
Activities seeking comprehensive solutions to environmental and socioeconomic issues in areas important for biodiversity conservation, including the Important Satoyama Areas (secondary forest and the surrounding countryside), prefectural natural parks, and prefectural wildlife protection areas.
