Enjoy Trekking

Mt. Aso was selected among the One Hundred Mountains of Japan by Kyuya Fukada, and it attracts many mountaineers due to its natural beauty and superb views. Please enjoy the area while being especially careful about the emission of volcanic gases, the sudden closure of some routes due to their tendency to collapse, and other precautions unique to Mt. Aso.

Trekking Routes

Mt. Kishimadake

Beginner Route. You can enjoy grassland mountains and the area around the bowl of the crater remains.

Mt. Eboshidake

Beginner Route. Trekking route around the edge of the crater remains of Kusasenri.

Mt. Nakadake – Mt. Takadake

Intermediate Route. This is a course for strong walkers. It starts at Kusasenri, and features a hike past Mt. Nakadake and over Mt. Takadake to Sensuikyo Gorge.

Rules and Manners

  1. Do not enter climbing routes restricted due to earthquake, torrential rain, or volcanic gas. Please check the latest information.

  2. Be sure to submit an ascent report and descent report.
  3. To avoid danger and protect ecosystems, do not enter areas off the climbing path.
  4. Equip yourself and prepare thoroughly, and make a climbing plan suited to your physical strength.
  5. Be careful that your mobile phone battery does not run out while climbing.
  6. There are no toilets on the route. Please bring a portable toilet.

Enjoy a Guided Tour

The Aso Volcano Museum offers guided tours that you can choose from to suit your interests and physical strength.
Together with the guides, visitors can see the many sides of Aso across spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

Museum Tour

Museum staff explain the exhibits in an easy-to-understand way, and use experiments to demonstrate how eruptions occur and recreate the creation of calderas. Visitors can experience the wonders of natural science through Mt. Aso-themed displays.

Field Tour

Guides walk visitors through volcanic terrain and geological formations unique to Mt. Aso, as well as the grasslands and flowers that surround them. These field tours allow visitors to get maximum enjoyment from the area.


  • Time required: Approx. 1–2 hours (varies depending on course)
  • Fee required (varies depending on number of people)

Geo Tour

A guided tour led by a licensed geology expert. Various routes are available, including a model course following up on various themes (1 day), a comparatively short trekking course (2–3 hours), and a visit to one site (approx. 90 minutes).
