Workshop and Open Symposium Announcement "Workshop on Greenhouse Gas Inventories in Asia (WGIA)" and "Open Symposium on Estimating the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions - How to Estimate Emissions within the Commitment Period"

The Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MoEJ) and the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) are pleased to announce the convening of the "6th Workshop on Greenhouse Gas Inventories in Asia (WGIA6)" and an "Open Symposium on Estimating the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions - How to Estimate Emissions within the Commitment Period".

WGIA has been annually convened since 2003, primarily aimed at providing extensive support for the preparation and improvement of national greenhouse gas inventories in Asian countries by facilitating vigorous interaction and the sharing of experience and information amongst experts and governmental officials (policy-makers) who are engaged in preparing such national inventories. This year's forthcoming WGIA6 will be conducted as part of the "Kobe Initiative" expressed in the Chair's summary of the G8 Environmental Ministers Meeting held this past May.

The open symposium will be convened as a side event of the WGIA in line with the recent upsurge in public interest in the estimation of greenhouse gas emissions and its related issues, particularly because the first commitment period (from 2008 to 2012) of the Kyoto Protocol has just begun.
