Central Environment Council Reports on the Designation of Water Area Types of Rivers for the Preservation of Aquatic Life

On April 28, 2006, the Central Environment Council submitted their report to the Minister of the Environment on the designation of water area types of rivers under the Environmental Quality Standards for Water Pollution for the Preservation of Aquatic Life (the EQS's for Aquatic Life), as requested by the Minister of the Environment on August 27, 2004.

The council deliberated on the water area type of four rivers (Kitakami River, Tama River, Yamato River and Yoshino River) as the first step in the designation of 47 water areas in total. Based on the report, the Ministry of the Environment will designate the water area types under the EQS for aquatic life to these rivers and take necessary measures.
