Third Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement and the SDGs (Second Announcement)

  The Third Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, co-organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat, will be held on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 July 2022. The conference will be hosted by the Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan, and held in a hybrid format, including online and at the United Nations University in Tokyo. (First announced on Friday 13 May 2022.)

  The conference is planned to hold discussions based on the advanced efforts of countries and relevant stakeholders to build a basis for synergistic action in support of the achievement of the various goals of the SDGs, and to raise ambition to achieve the Paris Agreement's goals and promote their implementation. 1. Objectives

  Building on the adoption of the SDGs and the Paris Agreement in 2015, the UNDESA (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs) and the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) Secretariat have convened a meeting on the synergies between the SDGs and the Paris Agreement to promote the implementation of climate action and the SDGs at global, regional, and national levels in Copenhagen in April 2019. A second meeting was held online due to COVID-19 between May and June 2020. The third meeting will now be hosted by MOE Japan, and held in a hybrid format, including online and at the United Nations University in Tokyo. Please see below for details.

4. Pre-Webinar

  On Friday 24 June 2022, the webinar entitled "Youth Inclusive Action on Integrating SDGs, Climate Change & Biodiversity" will be held by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), mainly forJapanese stakeholders, with the aim of creating momentum in the run to the conference. It will feature a discussion on the importance of fostering synergies between climate change measures and the SDGs with stakeholders from various fields. NAKAI Tokutaro, Vice-Minister of the Environment, Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOE Japan), will speak at the webinar.
