MOE Japan selected one application for the FY2022 Regional Decarbonization Model Project by Tidal Power Generation

The Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan, selected one project for the "FY2022 Regional Decarbonization Model Project by Tidal Power Generation."

1. Program outline

Practical use of marine renewable energy power generation is an important initiative to promote the introduction of renewable energy and strengthen global warming measures. In particular, tidal power has the advantage of stable power generation throughout the year due to a constant tidal cycle, and has little impact on the system. Thus, it is important to establish technologies and tidal power generation systems suited to Japan's sea area.

This program aims to achieve practical use of tidal power generation by upgrading the efficiency of tidal power generators and reducing costs, and to create business models towards commercialization of tidal power generation systems in order to acquire prospects for commercialization.

2. Screening results

  • Application period: From January 17, 2022 to February 4, 2022
  • Selected application: One
  • Project name: Regional decarbonization model project by tidal power generation
  • Representative participant: Kyuden Mirai Energy Company, Incorporated
  • Partner participant: Nagasaki Marine Industry Cluster Promotion Association
  • Outline:
The project aims to achieve practical use of tidal power generation technologies suited to Japan, create relevant business models, and promote decarbonization in regions including isolated islands, thereby contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In this program, demonstration will be conducted for a tidal power generator with a commercial-level output (1.1MW), and maintenance and business models will be studied. Additionally, symbiosis with local communities, implementation of an environmental assessment, and establishment of standardization will also be deliberated.
