Regarding the Publication of the Working Group III Contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

The 56th Session of the IPCC and 14th Session of the IPCC Working Group III (WGIII) were held online from March 21 to April 4, 2022. During the sessions, the Summary for Policymakers (SPM), which is the IPCC WGIII contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) (hereinafter, "WGIII AR6 Report"), was approved, while the main report and other related documents were accepted.

1. Outline

The 56th Session of the IPCC and 14th Session of WGIII were held online from March 21 to April 4, 2022. Eight years after the approval of the SPM of the WGIII contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) in 2014, the SPM of the WGIII AR6 Report was newly approved, while the main report and its attachments were accepted.

The IPCC published the SPM of the WGIII AR6 Report at 24:00 on April 4 (JST). The main report and related documents will be released to the public by the IPCC around August 2022, after editing and other necessary processes reflecting the plenary session's discussions will be completed.

2. Outline of the 56th Session of the IPCC and 14th Session of Working Group III

Period: 14 days from March 21 to April 4, 2022 (except for Sunday, March 27)

Venue: Online

Participants: More than 400 people, including delegates from the member governments of the IPCC and representatives of UNEP, UNFCCC and other international organizations; a total of 20 people attended the sessions from Japan, including participation from METI, MEXT, MAFF, JMA and MOE.

Towards the completion of the report, related governmental ministries and agencies in Japan organised a domestic liaison group to support the IPCC reporting activities. 17 Japanese scientists have participated in the writing of the WGIII AR6 Report. In addition, The Japanese government has proactively contributed to the report through government reviews and discussions at the plenary sessions. Please see the Attachment for the outline of the SPM, which summarized the latest scientific findings on climate change mitigation.

3. Future schedule

The Japanese government will translate the approved SPM of the WGIII AR6 Report into Japanese and publish the translation on the METI's website in a month.

The IPCC plans to approve the AR6 Synthesis Report at its 57th Session scheduled to be held in September, 2022.
