Signature of the Letter of Intent (LOI) on Cooperation of the Governments of Japan and Viet Nam for the Monitoring of Marine Litter

The MOE of Japan and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam signed a LETTER OF INTENT on cooperation in the field of monitoring of marine litter. The document was signed by the Vice-Minister for Global Environment Affairs, MOEJ, (Mr Morishita Satoru) and Deputy Minister, MONRE (Mr. Le Minh Ngan).

In order to tackle the global problem of marine waste, the MOE has supported ASEAN countries' efforts to reduce plastic waste in the ocean under the "ASEAN+3 Marine Plastics Debris Cooperative Action Initiative". This LOI implements cooperation in line with this initiative.

LOI OUTLINE

(1)Implementing Joint Pilot Projects to monitor marine litter around Viet Nam

(2)Conducting Training Courses in Japan for Vietnamese participants to develop human resources on the monitoring methodologies for marine litter

(3)Exchanging knowledge and experiences between Japan and Viet Nam to develop guidelines on monitoring of marine litter based on research findings gathered through the Joint Pilot Projects

(4)Sharing monitoring data and metadata of marine litter, including micro-plastics, collected and published by each country.
