FY 2005 Dissemination Status of Wastewater Treatment Facilities

The number of people served by wastewater treatment facilities across Japan as of the end of FY 2005 is 102.82 million, an increase of 2.02 million compared to FY 2004. The dissemination rate, which is the ratio of number of people served by wastewater treatment facilities to total population, is 80.9% (79.4% as of March 31, 2005). However, there is a big gap between population served by wastewater treatment facilities in big cities and medium and small towns and villages. For example, the dissemination rate in small towns with population under 50 thousand is only 62.9%. The breakdown of the number of people served by wastewater treatment facilities by facility types is: 88.02 million are served by sewage, 3.52 million by agricultural effluent treatment facilities, 10.93 million by johkasou, and 350 thousand by community wastewater treatment plants.
