Special Events in the 20th Marine Day : About Events of Collecting Marine Debris on a Nationwide Basis

20 years have passed until this year since the enactment of Marine Day. Therefore, we have decided to implement various events this time as the 20th anniversary special events of Marine Day around Marine Day. We will inform you of the events of collecting marine debris on a nationwide basis which will be implemented as one of the related events by calling on prefectures, etc. to participate in it from Ministry of the Environment.

We have decided to implement various events as the 20th anniversary special events of "Marine Day" for the purpose of enhancing the awareness of international society about the contribution of Japan as a maritime nation as well as cultivating a better understanding and interest of the ocean among people through making progress in the efforts of all the governmental and nongovernmental organizations at the time of the 20th anniversary Marine Day this year. Therefore, we have decided to implement the events of collecting marine debris on a nationwide basis as one of the related events by calling on prefectures, etc. to participate in it from Ministry of the Environment. In this event, we would like to interest as many people as possible in marine debris through promoting individual prefectures around Japan to register the events of controlling the generation of washed-ashore articles, etc. such as the coastal clean-up which will be conducted from June to August this year on a nationwide basis and making these events well known from Ministry of the Environment. In addition, it is also anticipated that the similar efforts will thereby increase in many coasts around Japan from now on and the countermeasures against washed-ashore articles will develop.
