An Aggregate of Fluorocarbons Destroyed in FY 2011

The Ministry of the Environment announced the amount of fluorocarbons destroyed in FY 2011 based on reports submitted by fluorocarbon destruction operators as required under the Law concerning the Recovery and Destruction of Fluorocarbons.

1. Total amount of fluorocarbons destroyed
Fluorocarbons destroyed in FY 2011 totaled 4,116 metric tons (1), a 1% decrease from the FY 2010 level. The breakdown of this figure by types of fluorocarbons is 226 tons of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), 2,362 tons of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and 1,528 tons of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

2. Amount of specified products collected
The breakdown of fluorocarbons collected by specified products is 3,430 tons of commercial refrigerators and air conditioners, a 4% increase from the FY 2010 level, and 679 tons of automotive air conditioners, a 25% decrease from the FY 2010 level.

Note: Since January 2005, recovery of fluorocarbons used as refrigerant in vehicles air conditioners has been carried out in line with the Law for the Recycling of End-of-Life Vehicles.
