Outcomes of the International Workshop on Governance in Asian Protected Areas: Follow-up on Aichi Targets (Post-2010 Targets) and Protected Areas Decisions of CBD/COP10

The International Workshop on Governance in Asian Protected Areas (Follow-up on Aichi Targets [Post-2010 Targets] and Protected Areas Decisions of CBD/COP10) was jointly organized by the MOE Japan, World Commission on Protected Areas-Japan (WCPA-J), and Akita International University from January 8 (Sat.) to 10 (Mon.), 2011, at Akita International University in Akita City, Akita Prefecture. The workshop was participated in by over 100 representatives of 17 countries/regions and related international/national organizations.
At the workshop, an action plan titled "Toward the Next Steps" (see attachment) was adopted, which aimed at building partnerships among Asian researchers, government administrators, NPOs and NGOs working on the governance of protected areas in Asia. By building partnerships among these parties, participants at the workshop sought to expand protected areas in Asia and reinforce their management, toward the World Parks Congress to be held in 2014 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
