Opening of the Secretariat for the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

On January 18, 2010, the Government of Japan has announced its launching of the "Secretariat for the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity" (CBD COP-10) for the CBD COP-10 and the 5th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (MOP-5) to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, on October 11- 29, 2010. The office of the Secretariat is located in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Both the MOE and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs play the main role in the Secretariat, but all the relevant ministries and agencies are responsible for the operational and logistics tasks for these conferences, including communications and public affairs.

Mr. Tsunao Watanabe (Deputy Director-General, Nature Conservation Bureau, MOE) is appointed as the Co-Secretary General of the Government of Japan for the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, as well as Mr. Kazuo Sunaga (Deputy Director-General, International Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of the Foreign Affairs), on the same day.
