A Workshop on "Developing Visions for a Low-Carbon Society (LCS) through Sustainable Development" Held:Japan-UK Joint Research Project

A workshop on "Developing Visions for a Low-Carbon Society (LCS) through Sustainable Development" was held from June 14 to 16, 2006 in Tokyo, hosted and organised by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MoEJ), the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the UK (Defra), National Institute for Environmental Studies of Japan (NIES), UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC), and the Tyndall Centre. The workshop was prepared under the guidance of the steering committee, which was comprised of scientists and governmental officials from Japan, UK, China, Germany, India, Mexico, Russia, and the USA. The results of the workshop are presented by the Executive Summary in the attached synopsis. The Workshop was held as the first international workshop under the joint research project of the MOEJ and the UK Defra. The objective of the workshop was to review country level studies on greenhouse gas emissions, to share visions, and to investigate pathways leading to the achievement of a LCS through technological solutions, innovations and behavioral changes. The participants included 43 experts from 16 countries and 4 international organisations, and around 60 observers. One of the major achievements of the workshop was that experts from both developed and developing countries sat together to consider target setting for and pathways towards achievement of LCSs. The insights gained at this workshop are expected to provide a useful input to formal and informal international climate dialogues. It was agreed that the next workshop would be held in the UK in 2007.
