An International Symposium "Living with Deserts II: Linkages between Dryland Science and On-the-Ground Practice" to be Held

The year 2006 marks the 10th anniversary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification coming into force. The United Nations declared the year 2006 to be the International Year of Deserts and Desertification (IYDD). The purpose of IYDD is to raise the recognition of the international community concerning countries which suffer from serious drought and desertification, especially the people who take damage from desertification in Africa.

On this occasion, with the aim of reviewing the achievements of past research, and exchanging and spreading scientific knowledge and insights regarding the desertification problem, an international symposium "Living with Deserts II: Linkages between Dryland Science and On-the-Ground Practice" will be held on Friday, August 25th in the U Thant International Conference Hall of the United Nations University in Tokyo. The symposium is jointly organized by the secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the United Nations University and other organizations.
