Speeches by the Environment Minister

Statement by NISHIMURA Akihiro, Minister of the Environment, Japan, on the G7 Climate, Energy and Environment Ministers' Meeting 2023 (August 30, 2022)

Today, it was announced that the G7 Climate, Energy and Environment Ministers' Meeting will be held under the G7 Japanese Presidency next year.

Global environmental issues such as climate change, circular economy, and biodiversity have been among the top concerns of G7 leaders in recent years. I expect that this meeting will be a very important opportunity where all relevant G7 Ministers will come together to discuss climate, energy, and environment, which are closely interrelated themes.

On this occasion, the Ministry of the Environment today established the Preparatory Office for the G7 Climate, Energy and Environment Ministers’ Meeting 2023. We will work with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), which will co-host the meeting, to ensure that all preparations are in place for the success of the meeting.

I am currently in Bali, Indonesia, to attend the G20 Environment and Climate Ministers’ Meeting. I will use this meeting as an opportunity to exchange views in person with Ministers of the G7 countries, as a first step toward building rapport with them as we move toward next year's G7.
