Finally, I would like to announce one other thing to you today.
The day after tomorrow?June 21st?is, as you know, the summer solstice.
Starting last year, NGOs and the Ministry of the Environment have
been conducting what is called a “lights down” event on the occasion
of the solstice. Approximately five million people participated
in this event last year through the cooperation of 2,278 sites
across Japan, including Tokyo Tower.
The aim of this event is to prompt a wide spectrum of people to want
to change their lifestyles to those which generate fewer carbon dioxide
emissions.
This year again, the Ministry of the Environment will conduct this
event from June 19th to 21st, and in particular, on June 20th from
8 to 10 PM, we will ask people to turn out their electric lights,
under this year’s theme of “Black Illumination: Lights Down 2004.” |
