Publication of "G20 Report on Actions against Marine Plastic Litter: Second Information Sharing based on the G20 Implementation Framework"

"G20 Report on Actions against Marine Plastic Litter: Second Information Sharing based on the G20 Implementation Framework" was compiled with information on policies and measures with regards to marine plastics litter taken / to be taken by the participating countries, regions and organisations. In the second report, 10 countries and 10 international organisations and NGOs newly shared their good practices and challenges, in addition to 15 countries which also participated in the first report.

1. Background

At the G20 Osaka Summit in June 2019, the "Osaka Blue Ocean Vision" was shared, which aims to reduce additional pollution by marine plastic litter to zero by 2050. To realize the vision, the "G20 Implementation Framework for Actions on Marine Plastic Litter" was adopted at the "G20 Ministerial Meeting on Energy Transitions and Global Environment for Sustainable Growth," held in the same month, for countries to share information on countermeasures and promote effective action through mutual learning.

Following the "G20 Report on Actions against Marine Plastic Litter: First Information Sharing based on the G20 Implementation Framework," formulated at the "Follow-up sessions for the G20 Implementation Framework" held in October 2019, the "G20 Report on Actions against Marine Plastic Litter: Second Information Sharing based on the G20 Implementation Framework" was compiled at the G20 Environment Ministers' Meeting held in September this year, under the initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, this year's G20 Presidency, with the support of the Ministry of the Environment, Japan.

2. Main contents

The countries, international organisations, and NGOs which contributed to the second report are as follows:

G20: Japan, EU, United States of America, Italy, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Turkey, France (12 countries)

Non-G20: Azerbaijan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Netherlands, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Spain, Solomon Islands, Chile, Norway, Philippines, Finland, Myanmar, Maldives (13 countries)

*Countries which submitted information for the first time: Azerbaijan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Sri Lanka, Solomon Islands, Chile, Turkey, Norway, Philippines, Myanmar, Maldives (10 countries)

International Organisations / NGOs: Asian Development Bank (ADB), Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), Global Environment Facility (GEF), International Resource Panel (IRP), Ocean Conservancy, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), United Nations Environment Programme, Asia and the Pacific Office (UNEP-ROAP), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), World Bank

*17 efforts and 2 quantitative progresses were newly reported on prevention and reduction of plastic waste generation.
