First meeting of the technical expert group to complete the development of a framework for the environmentally sound management of hazardous wastes and other wastes

Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ), and Secretariat of the Basel, Stockholm and Rotterdam Conventions organized the first meeting of the technical expert group to complete the development of a framework for the environmentally sound management of hazardous wastes and other wastes in Tokyo on 17 - 20 April 2012.

Existing information on the technical guidelines and guidance on ESM and the practical examples of ESM implementation by the parties and other organizations were presented by the experts and other participants. Possible skeletons and elements for ESM framework were discussed.

In order to draft ESM framework, the ESM expert group agreed on intersessional works until the Basel Convention Open-ended Working Group 8 (OEWG8) to be held in September 2012. Second meeting on ESM technical expert group will be held in October 2012.
