The Antarctic Treaty was adopted on December 1, 1959 and entered into force on June 23, 1961. The chart below shows the current Parties to the Treaty including 12 initial member countries. Those showing "Same as left" in the "Consultative States" are the initial members. Those showing dates in the "Consultative States" are the current consultative parties in addition to the initial members.

Consultative States are the countries that have been operating scientific activities through their own observation stations in Antarctica.
