Asia-Pacific Regional Inception Workshop on the Environmentally Sound Management of Electronic and Electrical Wastes and the Second Workshop of the Asian Network for Prevention of Illegal Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes Held

Ministry of the Environment, the National Institute of Environmental Study as well as the Secretariat of the Basel Convention jointly organized the Asia-Pacific Inception Workshop on the Environmentally Sound Management of Electronic and Electrical Wastes on November 21-22 and 24-25, 2005. The workshop was a kick-off of a project on the Environmentally Sound Management of Electronic and Electrical Wastes in Asia and the Pacific. The participants in the workshop discussed information sharing of e-waste issues, country projects, and so on. They agreed on an action plan set to officially launch the project.

On November 23, the Second Workshop of the Asian Network for Prevention of Illegal Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes attended by competent authorities to the Basel Convention and Basel Convention Regional Centers was held in Tokyo. The participants of the workshop shared information on the situation of and measures by countries in regard to the import/export of hazardous wastes. Also, the participants agreed to start working on the development of a guideline to distinguish second-hand commodities from wastes, setting out for controlling transboundary movement of hazardous wastes disguised as second-hand commodities.
