State of Discharge and Treatment of Industrial Waste in FY 2003

A nationwide survey on the state of discharge and treatment of industrial waste in FY 2003 (April 1, 2003 - March 31, 2004) was conducted and the results have been summarized as follows. (Figures in parentheses are those of FY2002.)

1.Total amount of discharge
Increase by approximately 18 million tons or 4.7% compared to FY 2002.
Total amount of discharge is approximately 412 million tons (393 million tons)

2.Amount of discharge by industries
Top-six industries account for 80% of the total, same as in FY 2002.

Electricity, gas, heat & water supply:92.25 million tons, 22.4%
(89.74 million tons, 22.8%)

Agriculture : 90.59 million tons, 22.0% (90.15 million tons, 22.8%)

Construction : 75.01 million tons, 18.2% (73. 51 million tons, 18.7%)

Pulp, paper & processed paper manufacturing:36.60 million tons, 8.9%
(30.40 million tons, 7.7%)
(5)
Steel industry: 30.72 million tons, 7.5% (26.50 million tons, 6.7%)

Chemical industry: 19.40 million tons, 4.7% (16.79 million tons, 4.3%)

3. Amount of discharge by type of waste
Top-three types of waste account for 80% of the total waste generated, same as in FY 2002.

Sludge:190.38 million tons, 46.3% (182.44 million tons, 46.4%)

Excrement of animals: 88.98 million tons, 21.6% (89.80 million tons, 22.8%)

Debris:59.25 million tons, 14.4% (55.36 million tons, 14.1%)

4.Treatment status of industrial waste
Final disposal decreased by 20 % compared to FY 2002.

Recycle:201 million tons, 48.9% (182 million tons, 46.3%)

Reduction:180 million tons, 43.7% (172 million tons, 43.7%)

Final disposal: 30 million tons, 7.4% (40 million tons, 10.1%)
