The 13th Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific (ECO ASIA 2005) Held

June, 5 2005

The Ministry of the Environment held the 13th Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific (ECO ASIA 2005) on June 4-5 in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture. Representatives of 19 nations in Asia-Pacific region and 12 international organizations participated in the meeting. Ms. Koike, Minister of the Environment of Japan, chaired the conference. Participants attended the meeting with "COOL BIZ*" outfits on.

The meeting discussed on efforts in the area of activities under the Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED), the Asia-Pacific Environmental Innovation Strategy Project (APEIS) and the 3R Initiative. At the end of the meeting a chair's summary was compiled.

Also, as one of the side events, Gifu Prefecture and the Ministry of the Environment co-organized the International Environmental Symposium 2005 on June 3, 2005 in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture. Participants shared the importance of actions taken by individual citizens towards the prevention of global warming.

* "COOL BIZ" is a nickname of a summer business look with no necktie and no jacket to keep cool and comfortable condition while contributing to reducing the GHG emissions in hot Japanese summer by room temperature being set to 28 degree C.
