Press Release

Signing of the Statement of Intent on Cooperation between Japan and Romania on the Kyoto Mechanisms

June 1, 2005

The governments of Japan and Romania are to sign a statement of intent on cooperation in facilitation of the realization of Joint Implementation projects in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol today. This is the first document that Japan would sign in terms of the Joint Implementation (hereinafter referred to as the "JI"). It is expected that the projects contributing to the reduction of GHGs would further be advanced between the two nations.

Romania has been keenly interested in the realization of the JI projects with Japan, underlining that formulation of a statement of intent between the two countries is crucial. The statement reaffirms governmental level cooperation to promote the JI projects in Romania as well as securing smooth transfer of emission reduction credits to the Japanese national registry.
