State of Discharge and Treatment of Industrial Waste in FY 2002

A nationwide survey on the state of discharge and treatment of industrial waste in FY 2002 (April 1, 2002 - March 31, 2003) was conducted and the results have been summarized as follows. (Figures in parentheses are those of FY2001.)

1. State of discharge and treatment
  (1) Total amount of dsicharge
Decrease by approximately 7 million tons (approximately 1.8%) compared to FY 2001.
- Total volume    approximately 393 million tons (400 million tons)
  (2) Amount by industries
- Top-six industries account for 80% of the total, same as in FY 2001.
- Agriculture    90.15 million tons, 22.9% (90.43 million tons, 22.6%)
- Electricity, gas, heat & water supply    89.74 million tons, 22.8%
(93.14 million tons, 23.3%)
- Construction    73.51 million tons, 18.7% (76.15 million tons, 19.0%)
- Pulp, paper & processed paper manufacturing    30.40 million tons, 7.7%
(27.14 million tons, 6.8%)
- Steel industry    26.50 million tons, 6.7% (26.45 million tons, 6.6%)
- Chemical industry    16.79 million tons, 4.3% (16.89 million tons, 4.2%)
  (3) Volume by type of waste
Top-three types of waste account for 80% of the total waste generated, same as in FY 2001.
- Sludge    182.44 million tons, 46.4% (186.9 million tons, 46.7%)
- Excrement of animals    89.80 million tons, 22.8% (90.09 million tons, 22.5%)
- Debris    55.36 million tons, 14.1% (57.10 million tons, 14.3%)
  (4) Treatment of industrial waste
Rates of recycle, reduction during the treatment, and final disposal remain about the same level as in FY 2001.
- Recycle    182 million tons, 46.3% (183 million tons, 45.8%)
- Reduction    172 million tons, 43.7% (175 million tons, 43.8%)
- Final disposal    40 million tons, 10.1% (42 million tons, 10.4%)

2. State of final disposal sites (as of April 1, 2003)
        Critical status is unchanged.
Total capacity    181.78 million cubic meters (up 2.37 million cubic meters from 2001)
Remaining lifetime    4.5 years
