At the Johannesburg Summit, Prime Minister Koizumi stressed that in order to ensure the creation of a sustainable society, human resource development is essential. Also, having given great consideration to the proposals of Japanese NGOs, Japan recommended that a United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development be launched from 2005 and this proposal was adopted by the UN General Assembly. An international implementation plan is being developed by UNESCO, to be followed by the development and implementation of specific action plans in each nation.
The purpose of implementing education for sustainable development is so that we can foster the ability to solve the challenges which have emerged, utilizing each region’s learning process of “participation.”
Taking up issues cooperatively as we overcome the differences among various disciplines and viewpoints is necessary if we are to bring about the sustainable society which we all strive for.
