At the Johannesburg Summit, the Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment
and Development (APFED) and the Asia-Pacific Environmental Innovation
Strategy Project (APEIS), both of which were launched at ECO Asia,
were announced to the world as concrete actions to be undertaken
at the Asia-Pacific regional level, as Type II Summit documents.
The purpose of APFED is to propose a more equitable and sustainable
development strategy that is appropriate for the Asia-Pacific region.
The aims of APEIS are to propose options for environmental policies
towards accomplishing sustainable development utilizing information
acquired through the latest scientific technology and to help developing
countries achieve the formulation and implementation of environmental
conservation policies.
The outcomes of these projects will be announced at ESCAP’s Ministerial
Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific
(MCED) which will be held in Korea in March 2005. |
