Detailed Description of Best Practices
Japan No.9

I. Title of the Best Practice

Publication of "Initiatives in Kanagawa to Prevent Global Warming -- 100 Practical Examples"

II. Overview of the Best Practice

A. Feature of publication "Initiatives in Kanagawa to Prevent Global Warming -- 100 Practical Examples"
1. Background
This book was compiled to give citizens to a better understanding of what they should do to prevent global warming, and to promote voluntary actions. The Kanagawa Global Environment Conservation Promotion Committee was established in Kanagawa Prefecture to promote a society that puts higher priority on environmental conservation; it promotes cooperation between citizens, enterprises and local government. The book was co-edited by this Committee and Kanagawa Prefecture.

2. Contents of the practice
The book provides each group of social actors (citizens, commercial enterprises and local government) with practical examples of initiatives to prevent global warming. The 102 examples , selected because they are easy to implement, consist of energy saving practices, waste reduction and recycling practices, transportation practices, town planning, environmental education and others.

B. Reasons for Inclusion as a Best Practice

  • It is a compilation of action principles of Agenda 21 Kanagawa.
It is based on 21 action principles of Agenda 21 Kanagawa to conserve the global environment, which were formulated in 1993. It is an emerging approach that can serve as a model for other local governments in Japan, being the first publication that gives concrete examples of local initiatives to implement a local Agenda 21.
  • It provides a variety of examples for a variety of actors.
It gives examples of actions carried out by various social actors, including individuals, households, schools, neighboring self-governing bodies, NGOs, businesses, local authorities and others. Moreover, the practices vary from those done individually to those carried out by commercial enterprises or at a local level. It can be utilized as fundamental data book on practices to prevent global warming.
  • It contributes to dissemination of environmentally friendly practices.
In editing this book, special attention was paid to make it easy to understand by including many charts, pictures and quantitative figures (i.e., energy cost saving). It is expected that the publication will contribute to the promotion of practical actions to prevent global warming, through awareness-raising and environmental education in communities or schools.
