Advanced Waste Management for CE & Energy Solutions

Organizer
Japan Environmental Facilities Manufacturers Association (JEFMA)
Details

Abstract

In the past, rapid increasing of urban waste caused public health issues in Japan. Therefore, to promote sanitary treatment and volume reduction of waste, namely the shift from landfill to incineration has been encouraged. Furthermore, efforts have been made to promote the formation of a recycling-oriented society based on the proper treatment and the recovery of energy such as heat and electricity. This system has contributed significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG) compared to landfill.
In this seminar, we will present the progress achieved in reducing GHG emissions through the development of waste management technologies, as well as their global expansion and the latest waste management and energy recovery aimed at realizing Net-Zero and CE.
Specifically, we will introduce further development of conventional waste management technologies, such as the production of chemical raw materials from waste, incineration technology that enables efficient CO2 recovery, and effective use of low-temperature waste heat.
This seminar is organized by the Japan Environmental Facilities Manufacturers Association (JEFMA), an association of waste treatment plant manufacturers.

Session Summary
Japan's efforts to realize a circular economy in the waste sector, and gave lectures on decarbonization technologies of waste treatment plant manufacturers were introduced. At the beginning of the seminar, Minister ASAO expressed expectation that proper waste management contributes to maintaining a sanitary environment and to achieving net-zero. The lectures demonstrated that Japan's waste treatment technology can contribute to global decarbonization. The seminar was attended by many people, which indicated a strong interest in climate change mitigation in the waste sector worldwide.
