Regional EST Forum in Asia
In the Asian region, motorization has been accelerated by rapid economic growth and urbanization, which has created various environment and traffic related problems. Therefore, there is a need to put in place relevant and effective policy measures immediately. In this regard, we have held discussions to promote the realization of environmentally sustainable transport (EST) in Asia, under the following international conferences: "The International Conference on Environmentally Sustainable Transport in the Asian Region" held in March 2003 and "Manila Policy Dialogue on Environment and Transport in the Asian Region" held in January 2004. Furthermore, in August of this year, as indicated in the "Manila Statement", the first meeting of "Regional EST Forum in Asia" was held to discuss issues related to environment and transport within the region, and to propose measures for the realization of environmentally sustainable transport in Asia, including the preparation of national EST strategies and action plans for selected countries
