International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22)


1.May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) sanctioned by the United Nations, and events to popularize and raise awareness among the public under the international theme are held throughout the world.

2.In Japan, the Ministry of the Environment, related organizations of the J-GBF*, etc. will hold events to experience, study, and make actions on biodiversity throughout Japan, during the period around May 22.

1.International Day for Biological Diversity

International Day for Biological Diversity is an international day sanctioned by the United Nations for popularizing and raising awareness on issues regarding biodiversity. Commemorating the adoption of the text of the Convention on Biological Diversity on May 22, 1992, at the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity, May 22 every year is sanctioned as the International Day for Biological Diversity.
Every year, various events are held around this day throughout the world, under the international theme to popularize and raise awareness among the public for the conservation and mainstreaming of biodiversity. This year's theme is “Be part of the Plan.”

2.Event

Last year, the Ministry of the Environment co-organized the International Day for Biological Diversity 2023 Symposium with United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), Global Environment Outreach Centre (GEOC), The Nature Conservation Society of Japan (NACS-J).
This year, UNU-IAS will hold an international symposium on May 11 on supporting recovery efforts following the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. Discussions on biodiversity will be made under the topic “Leveraging regional strengths for recovery, utilizing the resources of satoyama and satoumi.”
