These waters include the Yamato Bank and the seamounts scattered in the deep waters in the southern Yamato Bank.
The Yamato Bank is an underwater mountain range located in the central Sea of Japan, 236 m deep at its shallowest. In addition to its location on the boundary between a cold-water mass and a warm-water zone, it also is one of the best fishing grounds in the Sea of Japan (Sakurai, personal communication). As a result of its high level of productivity at the surface layer, its sea floor also is characterized by high levels of productivity and biodiversity due to the organic sediment from the surface layer.
