Off the coast of Kushiro there are submarine canyons or deep sea plains, which generally have smooth slopes with almost no seamounts or other promontories (Japan Oceanographic Data Center, 1985). Diverse sea-floor creatures such as cod, crab, and shrimp live in the areas sloping down from the continental shelf.
