FY 2004 Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Japan

The Ministry of the Environment has compiled the data on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for FY 2004 in compliance with the Climate Change Policy Law. The total emission of GHGs was 1.355 billion tons CO2 equivalent. This value represents a decrease of 3 million tons from FY 2003 (1.358 billion tons CO2 equivalent) but exceeds the total emission (1.255 billion tons CO2 equivalent) of the base year (1990) set under the Kyoto Protocol by 8%.

Currently, estimation methods of greenhouse gas emissions are being improved so that we can establish the base year emissions, and based on which we report the assigned amounts of GHG emissions for the first commitment period (2008-2012) to the UNFCCC Secretariat by September 1, 2006. Using these improved methods, the above announced values may be recalculated.
