Approval of the Regional Environmental Pollution Control Programs of Four Areas

On March 19, 2007, the Minister of the Environment approved the new regional environmental pollution control programs of the four areas, Okaya, Gihu, Aichi, and Yokkaichi. These programs were formulated by the prefectural governors in response to the instructions given by the Minister of the Environment requiring the formulation of new regional environmental pollution control programs on October 13th last year.

Article 17 of the Basic Environment Law stipulates that governors of prefectures suffering serious pollution need to formulate regional environmental pollution control programs pursuant to the instructions of the Minister of the Environment. The formulated programs are subject to approval by the Minister. As of today, 31 areas in Japan have regional environmental pollution control programs.
