MOEJ selected 5 companies to participate in the Supply Chains Decarbonization Project

(August 20 2021, Tokyo) The Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ), selected 5 companies to participate in "the Fiscal Year 2021 Model Project for Supporting Achievement of the Decarbonization targets of the Entire Supply Chains, such as Science Based Targets (SBT)*." This project aims to support the achievement of greenhouse gas emission reduction targets of entire supply chains.

From July 5, 2021 to July 30, MOEJ called for companies' applications to participate in this project, and received 9 applications. Upon comprehensive consideration of their industry, business, GHG emissions, and reduction targets, MOEJ selected the following 5 companies.

OGASAWARA Yasushi, Director, Climate Change Policy Division, Global Environment Bureau, declared:

It is encouraging that many private companies have applied for this project to support the achievement of decarbonization targets of entire supply chains. The cooperation of the private sector in considering supply-chain-wide decarbonization is essential for Japan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. MOEJ will continue to support companies' efforts toward decarbonization.

The Paris Agreement calls for emission reductions by non-governmental entities such as corporations. As a result, companies' efforts toward decarbonization management, such as commitments to SBTs, are spreading, especially among large corporations with global operations. Beyond individual corporations, efforts toward decarbonization need to be expanded to entire supply chains in order to reduce Japan's greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. MOEJ decided to launch "the Fiscal Year 2021 Model Project for Supporting Achievement of the Decarbonization targets of the Entire Supply Chains, such as SBTs." to support corporations in achieving their goals including SBTs and promote emission reduction efforts. With this project, MOEJ aims to create corporate decarbonization role models and to expand this decarbonization expertise to a wide range of companies.

Science Based Targets are greenhouse gas emission reduction targets set by companies for the next 5 to 15 years, consistent with the levels required by the Paris Agreement (which aims to limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and 1.5°C below pre-industrial levels).
