Four Areas Instructed to Formulate Regional Environmental Pollution Control Programs

On October 13, 2006, the Minister of the Environment determined that four areas, Aichi, Okaya, Gifu, and Yokkaichi, need to formulate new regional environmental pollution control programs since their previous programs' effective period had expired at the end of FY 2005. The Minister instructed the prefectural governors concerned to formulate new programs. Article 17 of the Basic Environment Law stipulates that governors of prefectures suffering serious pollution need to formulate regional environmental pollution control programs pursuant to the instructions of the Minister of the Environment. The formulated programs are subject to approval by the Minister. As of the end of FY 2005, 32 areas in Japan have regional environmental pollution control programs.
