The achievements of the environmental effectiveness of green purchasing by the national entities in FY 2009

The MOE, Government of Japan, added up the purchasing data in FY 2009 reported by the national entities based on the Law Concerning the Promotion of Procurement of Eco-Friendly Goods and Services. MOE also made a trial calculation of its effectiveness from the point of view of GHG reduction and researched its impacts on the market.
The points of this announcement are as below:

1. Most procurement items purchased by the national entities meet the standards based on Law Concerning the Promotion of Procurement of Eco-Friendly Goods and Services.

2. GHG reduction by this achievement is estimated as 161,000 of tons, which is equivalent to the emission from 78,000 people per year.

3. The result of this research shows that the shares of eco-friendly goods (18 items) tend to rise on the market. 2 examples of this tendency are shown below:
(Ex.1) high-frequency inverter lighting appliances
22.4% (FY 2000) / 45.5% (FY 2004) / 67.1% (FY 2009)
(Ex.2) staplers
15.6% (FY 2000) / 50.0% (FY 2004) / 93.3% (FY 2009)
