International Year of Biodiversity

The United Nations proclaimed 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB).
The objectives of the IYB 2010 are to achieve the threefold objective of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), namely, the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the access to and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources, and to raise public awareness for achieving the 2010 biodiversity target.

The UN also encourages the member states to establish national committees to hold various events for the IYB.
The government of Japan is currently working on the establishment of a national committee and preparations for some events related to biodiversity, including the IYB closing event to be held in Ishikawa prefecture in December 2010.
