July 10, 2006

The Ministry of the Environment (MOE) has promoted the Kodomo Hotaranger (kid ranger to protect Japanese fireflies) Awards to encourage children's water environment conservation activities aimed at protecting fireflies since FY 2004, and now invites entries to FY 2006 awards. Excellent and unique activities are awarded the Minister of the Environment Prize.

This year, the MOE increased categories and prizes in order to further promote water environment conservation activities.

Among fireflies, GENJIBOTARU and HEIKEBOTARU are the two commonly seen fireflies in Japan. They spend most of their lives around waterfront areas.
