The Aggregate Amount of Fluorocarbons Destroyed in FY 2008

The Ministry of the Environment has announced the amount of fluorocarbons destroyed in FY 2008 based on reports submitted by fluorocarbon destruction operators as required under the Law concerning the Recovery and Destruction of Fluorocarbons.

1. Total amount of fluorocarbons destroyed
Fluorocarbons destroyed in FY 2008 totaled 4,161 tons, a 15% increase from the FY 2007 level. The breakdown of this figure by fluorocarbon-type is 376 tons of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), 2,439 tons of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and 1,346 tons of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)

2. Number of specified products collected
The breakdown of fluorocarbons collected in relation to specified products is 3,309 tons of commercial refrigerators and air conditioners, an increase of approximately 17% from the FY 2007 level, and 835 tons of mobile air conditioners, an increase of approximately 3% from the FY 2007 level.

Note: Since January, 2005, the recovery of fluorocarbons used in refrigerant in mobile air conditioners has been carried out in accordance with the Law for the Recycling of End-of-Life Vehicles.
