Speeches by the Environment Minister

Statement by NISHIMURA Akihiro, Minister of the Environment, Japan, on the Result of Sea Area Monitoring related to ALPS Treated Water (August 27, 2023)

Following the start of the discharge of ALPS treated water on 24 August, Ministry of the Environment performed the collection of seawater samples from surrounding sea areas in the morning of 25 August and the analysis of the concentrations of radioactive materials which prioritizes rapidness.

As a result, tritium concentrations correspond to below the lower limit of detection (below 7~8 Bq/L) at all 11 sampling points and would have no adverse impact on human health and the environment.

For the time being, Ministry of the Environment will conduct the sea area monitoring and publish the results every week. In addition, Ministry of the Environment will also conduct an analysis with high detection sensitivity which has been conducted in the past, and announce the result in approximately two months. In order to prevent adverse impacts on reputation, we firmly maintain monitoring with a high level of objectivity, transparency, and reliability.
