Statement by NISHIMURA Akihiro, Minister of the Environment, Japan, on the Implementation of Sea Area Monitoring related to ALPS Treated Water (August 24, 2023)
Following the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea today, Ministry of the Environment will collect seawater samples from the surrounding areas in the next morning, taking diffusion status of the discharged water into account, to analyze concentrations of radioactive materials.
Ministry of the Environment will carry out the analysis as soon as possible, and plan to publish the result of the analysis that prioritizes rapidness in the forenoon of 27 August.
For the time being, Ministry of the Environment will conduct the sea area monitoring and publish the results every week. In order to prevent adverse impacts on reputation, we firmly maintain monitoring with a high level of objectivity, transparency, and reliability.
