In September 2015, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in The United Nations Sustainable Development Summit. The Target 6.3 of SDGs stipulates that “by 2030, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater” should be accomplished.

Based on that, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), Japan and Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan proposed the establishment of “Asia Wastewater Management Partnership (AWaP)” at The Third Asia-Pacific Water Summit (11th and 12th December, 2017 in Yangon, Myanmar).

This partnership consists of government officials from Asian countries engaged in policy-making on sewage treatment, and others. The main objective of the activity is to organize regular meetings, share information on wastewater management, and discuss on solutions for the future.

At the Preparation Workshop on the Asia Wastewater Management Partnership (AWaP), which was held on the following day of the Third Asia-Pacific Water Summit, the participant countries had a common understanding of the challenges to achieve SDGs target, exchanged views on the necessary activity of the partnership, and agreed that AWaP would be established in the summer of 2018.

At this first general meeting, AWaP has been officially established, its Implementation Guidelines were confirmed and work plan was discussed.

Also, after the meeting, a symposium open for general audience including Japanese interested parties was held, where each AWaP participant country presented its current efforts in wastewater management, as well as its work plan to achieve SDGs by 2030 and intended contribution to AWaP.

<Objectives of the First General Meeting>

  1. Based on the establishment agreement in December 2017, to share the Implementation Guidelines outlining AWaP’s operational policy and the management structure among the participant countries.
  2. To discuss the work plan of AWaP, and to set specific goals to be targeted.
  3. To organize the Kitakyushu Statement which describes the establishment of the Asia Wastewater Management Partnership (AWaP) and its work plans for a few years ahead.

Objectives of the Symposium

To share information about each AWaP partner country’s current efforts and work plan towards achieving SDGs through their presentations, to the interested parties and the general public.
